There are (at least) two different dvi connector types, dvi-i and dvi-d. My laptop has the wrong type for the cable that came with this switch. You can look at the connector on your computer and see the difference. If the connector for the monitor does not have the four extra pin ports around the flat pin, then you will need the adapter (check out the photo in the adapter mentioned above). The adapter makes everything work properly. I was concerned that the audio portion of the switch wouldn't work properly with the adapter, but it was no problem.
This switch also floated around on my desk after all the cables were attached. It just isn't heavy enough to stay in one place. I fixed that problem with a bit of hook-and-loop connector.
Other than those two issues, I would definitely recommend this product. It easily connects the two computers to one keyboard, mouse and digital monitor, and does so without any problems.
