The laser tracking is smooth and you don't need a mouse pad on solid color objects/tables like you do for optical mice. I haven't tried using it on a mirror surface but who does that anyway? I'm sure it'll probably have problems with clear glass surfaces too.
Before I bought this model (cuz the wife wanted pink) I had previously bought 2 black, 1 gray, and 1 red. All of them work flawlessly. The receiver is the perfect size for laptop/notebook pcs (plug and forget) and it only protrudes off the USB port about 1/4 of an inch. If you do decide to take out the receiver, you can store it in the mouse itself inside the battery compartment and it'll turn off the mouse at the same time. If not, the mouse sleeps after a while of non-use but there is a on/off switch on the bottom which will manually turn it off.
However one thing I must say is that if one has large hands, they may feel a bit uncomfortable using this mouse for prolonged periods. It's a trade off for portability. Desktop users with large hands may want a larger model.
