(More customer reviews)This mouse shares the same fate with most Logitech products in my experience. I am very picky when it comes to these higher-end peripherals, so please bear that in mind. Although, if you are spending this much on a mouse instead of a standard 2-button one that costs less than $15, perhaps you should expect as much as I do as well.
As a background, I am a gamer (non-FPS mainly, at the moment), but I like to use my mouse, like my keyboard for productivity purposes as well as general computing/web browsing etc. I know a lot of these G series things are mainly for gamers, and the DPI swapping and all that are great for FPS games and such, but the idea of having macros and customizable profiles (like the G-15 keyboard) are awesome for my job, and for just about anyone that uses any program with any degree of repetition. So for me, the extra weights, the DPI swapping, and things like that are extras that I don't care about, but the bare bones things matter more. And with that, the cons:
The customizable LED allows you to swap between a lot of different colors. But when you choose green it turns orange, in some cases, and the variation between colors of the same base is quite negligible. Not a big deal, but if you care about that, be warned.
In line with my love of using the mouse for productivity in addition to gaming, I LOVE the inclusion of the left/right scroll option on the mouse wheel. However, since this mouse wheel is not rounded on the sides, and instead has more of a 'corner' thing going on, getting your finger in position to press it to the left or right basically requires a lot more movement and repositioning on your part than it would with a rounded mouse wheel, there by almost negating the inclusion of this feature as a real convenience.
Speaking of the mouse wheel, this mouse might as well not have a middle click function. You have to press the wheel so ridiculously hard it becomes a task that you actually have to focus on trying to do, as opposed to just, you know, pressing a button without concern. The real joke is that the mouse wheel has two difference scroll modes (more on that next), and when you have the smooth/fast one selected, pressing the wheel becomes even harder because of the wheel's inclination to just turn really fast. I asked my girlfriend to come over and try to show her just how bad it was, and her finger ended up slipping off the mouse and she jammed it into the desk in front, slightly hurting herself (I mean, nothing serious, but still...). It's pretty bad.
And the smooth scrolling. I guess this is a feature also more on the 'productivity' side of mouses, but for me it just resulted in annoyance. First off, with normal scrolling, you have to scroll to whatever point you want to get to. Maybe it takes a while to get to the bottom of a 10 page document, but the other option is that you have to manually stop the smooth scroll where you want it, which is kind of hard when the pages are flying by. I know you can slow it down and all that, but the point remains - you still have to stop the basically-frictionless wheel where you want it, which makes it really annoying when you scroll to the bottom of one page to see what you need to see, and then alt-tab to something else, only to have the wheel still spinning and shoot you down to the bottom of that one. So either way, you need to make the same amount of effort to control where you want to go, only with this option it's reactive instead of proactive, which I would prefer.
The two different housings you can use for the mouse both have a weird issue. Basically the left side of the bottom of the each of them curves outward a bit to match the curve or your thumb, but the very bottom edge remains an almost-sharp corner where it meets the bottom of the mouse. So this means that if you ever reposition your hand by ever so slightly lifting the mouse and dragging it to the left, the edge will scrape across your mouse pad, which depending on the material could be a bit annoying or scratch it up (which it did in my case pretty bad after only a night of using it). I didn't even really notice I did this sort of motion until using this mouse.
The two housings are also different materials, and the one that is larger (the main picture here) is supposed to be some cool 'skin' thing that reduces hand sweat. Not sure if it does that really, but it does feel like your mouse is covered in a disgusting grime, so I guess that's cool?
I'm not sure how bad of a feature this is, but some other sites complained about it, so I'll mention it: The buttons to swap between user profiles and the mouse wheel scroll styles are on the bottom, so they aren't exactly something you can do on the fly. Although, I can't imagine too many people will need to do that sort of thing on the fly, so it probably doesn't matter. However, something like the G-15 keyboard has the 3 "M" keys right above the "G" keys, for easy swapping.
The two DPI (or whatever you set them to) buttons are also kind of annoying to use without any sort of real effort. The back/forward buttons for the most part are okay, but honestly, in an age where those are a staple of a decent mouse, it's hard for me to believe a mouse can exist with back/forward buttons that are anything less than perfect.
Oh, and I almost forgot, the buttons and the scroll wheel are pretty loud compared to other mice. Like annoyingly loud.
Honestly, even if the only thing wrong with this was the middle mouse button, I think that alone would be enough to say this mouse is garbage. I mean, it's awesome that you can customize the buttons so many different ways and all (my primary positive reason for buying this), but even though I got it for only $59.99 at BB this week, it was still way too much money. Right now I'm going back to my Logitech MX518, which (minus the DPI swapping I don't care about) is basically just a damn good 'normal' mouse.
And meanwhile I'm praying they bring back the MediaMouse, and add further customization. I had two which eventually lost functionality over time, but those were the best things (for me) ever. :(
